Put a Little Science in Your Future
Although I wrote this video in 1998, it remains my favorite project of all time. The challenge was to inspire at-risk teens to enroll in a science and math intensive curriculum at West Mesa High School. The project requirements included shooting the video on site at West Mesa and Sandia National Laboratories and using West Mesa drama students as on-screen talent. Images of the West Mesa mascot, the Mustang were a dominant visual element. I wrote the lyrics and worked with rapper and musician Jay Dee Lopez, a West Mesa graduate, to refine them so they would fit with his rap style and music. It was Jay Dee's idea to include quotes from Martin Luther King Jr. and President John F. Kennedy as additional inspiration and motivation for our target audience. It was an honor to work with such a talented young musician. What made this video even more dear to my heart is that the kids loved it.
Dante: Generative Modeling of Operational Studies of Tactics and Technologies
The Intelligent Systems and Robotics Center at Sandia National Laboratories wanted to promote this software tool set to potential customers. Challenge: find a creative way to play up the name, Dante. I used Gustave Dore lithographs from an antique copy of The Divine Comedy to open the story. Video editor and producer: Regina Valenzuela,Sandia National Laboratories.
Umbra Modeling and Simulation Framework
This video was written for the Intelligent Systems and Robotics Center at Sandia National Laboratories to promote a complex software tool set. Challenge: find a visual hook that described the capabilities. What better to describe the tool sets features of versatility and simplicity than a Swiss Army knife and Legos? Video editor and producer: Regina Valenzuela, Sandia National Laboratories.
Big Science Seeks Big Solutions
Client Cray wanted three videos promoting different aspects of its Jaguar XT-5 supercomputer. They wanted people featured prominently in the videos as well as the Opteron processor from partner AMD. This video describes the important scientific computing done for the Leadership Computing initiative at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Challenge: Craft interview questions which would lead scientists to discuss the simulations running on the screen behind them. Videographer and editor: Dale Kruzic, Kruzic Productions
Built for Speed: The Green Machine
Cray's goal for this video was detailed discussion of the energy saving design for the Jaguar XT-5 supercomputer. Challenge: Interview the Cray CTO and Operating Officer in such a way that they would describe the goals and technical process. Interview a director at Oak Ridge so he would describe how much money was saved. Plus, prominently feature the Cray plant in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin and highlight pride of craftsmanship through interviews and visuals. Videographer and editor: Dale Kruzic, Kruzic Productions
Accelerating Innovation
This is a general promotional video promoting both the Jaguar XT-5 and Cray's partnerships with academia, industry and government. Challenge: Encapsulate the Cray values and goals in an interview with the Cray CEO and meld with interviews of scientists who use the Jaguar XT-5.
